The goal in this year's CQ WPX SSB was to beat the nearly 30 year old LA record in MOST of just below 5.2 mill points set by LG5LG in 1981. With LA5KO / Roy and LB1G / Jan as the only two operators, we knew it would be tough. Both of us had aimed for this record before at LA8W/LN8W and failed. But we did it! The old record was passed on Sunday morning, and LN9Z ended up with a claimed score in excess of 8.5 mill points after having worked 3194 QSOs and 1148 prefixes. VY TNX to all who called us ! Looking forward to work you again in the next contest.
With only two operators, a quite limited antenna farm and low flux and few sunspots, we knew it would be hard. We studied the new rules in advance, and we had made up a strategy of how to exploit the rules with two stations and with a minimum of sleep. The startegy worked well and both operators had a total of three hours of sleep during the 48 hour contest. The 20m antenna is pretty good and the 80m antenna is reasonably good. The single quarter wave ground plane on 40m is mediocre, and we did not have any antennas on 160m, 15m and 10m before the contest. On Friday afternoon we put up an LA1IC Sloping Windom which we could use with reasonable SWR and full power on 15m and 10m. We managed to work some 127 QSOs on 15m, but NIL on 10m and NIL on 160m. This was very fun!
